A day after the murder of Punjab Police commando Sukhwinder Singh in front of the Walking Street nightclub at Phase 11, the police today arrested the key suspect, Charanjit Singh, alias Sahil, and his two acquaintances.

Sahil and his acquaintances — Atul Gupta and Ashish — were nabbed from Panipat by a joint team of the Mohali police and the Panipat police.
The police have recovered a .32 bore pistol that was used in the crime and an Audi car in which the suspects travelled after committing the crime.

“It was a licensed weapon, belonging to Sahil,” said Mohali SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal while sharing the details of arrests.
The SSP said after murdering Sukhwinder, who was posted in the security of the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, the suspects fled to Haryana after filling the fuel tank at Landran. “We got a clue to their escape route through the footage of a CCTV camera installed at a toll plaza. An alert was sent to the Haryana Police and our teams were also dispatched. The suspects were nabbed in Panipat,” said the SSP.

Sahil fired three shots at Sukhwinder around 3 am yesterday in front of the nightclub at Phase 11. Both had a tiff inside the club before the incident. Sukhwinder, who received a bullet in his chest, was declared brought dead at a private hospital in Sector 71. Both the victim and the prime suspects were accompanied by their friends at the time of the incident.

“We traced and nabbed the accused in a joint operation with the Haryana Police within 14 hours of the crime,” said the SSP.
